Because of reasons like system flaws and misoperation during operating process, Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) is contaminated by mixed extraneous matters such as water, mechanical impurities, chemical substances. Among these extraneous matters, chemical contamination is the most harmful pollution, which is hard to be cleaned up by simple methods.

Chemical contamination debases the quality of HTF. It not only causes enormous economic and resources waste but also brings serious danger to the safe operation of the heating system. Without thermal stability, chemical substances would cause thermal cracking and polymerization reaction at high temperatures producing low and high boiling components in the system, which negatively changes the quality of HTF and thus affects the normal operation of the heating system. Some of the chemical substances mixed in operating system could potentially catalyze thermal cracking and polymerization reaction, rapidly worsening the quality and shortening the life of HTF. What is worse, some of the mixtures can react unpredictably with HTF at high temperatures, which would cause unexpected and uncontrolled danger in HTF and operation system, and the safety hazard and danger could be huge. Therefore, it is highly necessary to put an end to the chemical contamination.

The analysis shows that the chemical contamination is mostly from outside the system, during the process of transportation, storage and injection, and also found in new installations and repaired equipments and pipelines which are not cleaned up thoroughly. Additionally, the heated components would leak into the HTF during production process because of misoperation and system flaws. The former is caused by human factors and can be avoided, while the latter can also be avoided with enhanced management and prevention, standardized operation, prudent maintenance and periodic inspection towards equipments. Special attention with regard to chemical contamination should be given to those systems using higher-priced synthesis HTF with high thermal stability and long service life, in order to make sure the quality of HTF, thus lowering operational risks and costs.
